Many years ago, I needed to have a tough conversation about getting my needs met, and I was clear about one thing: I wanted to WIN.  

I went out and bought a book on assertiveness that both stopped me in my tracks, and changed my life.  

The introduction starts with this quote: “Assertiveness isn’t about building a good disguise. It’s about developing the courage to take the disguise off.” - Randy J. Paterson

People often give me the compliment “I just feel like I can be myself around you.” I know this is a direct consequence of my extensive training and practice of assertiveness.

Assertiveness is not just about getting my needs met or your needs met, it is about getting our needs met.

How do we show up as ourselves in relationships, without hiding behind a mask of performance?

How can we let go of being right in every situation in exchange for something even better: being honest? 

How do you express your boundaries when to do so would release a decades old fireball of emotion from your belly, and singe the eyebrows of the person in front of you?
